The Introvert Entrepreneur by Beth Buelow

This is a practical, step-by-step guide to building a successful and sustainable business. What makes it unique is that it is, to date, the only book on entrepreneurship written specifically from an introvert point of view.

Many people assume you have to be an extrovert to be a successful entrepreneur. This book challenges that assumption suggesting that, contrary to popular belief, many of our typical introvert traits actually lend themselves very well to entrepreneurship – the trick is learning how to use our introvert strengths to our advantage and manage our energy successfully.

However, operating as we do in an extrovert-oriented culture, these same traits can also throw up particular challenges for introverts wanting to run a business, and have led many to abandon their entrepreneurial ideas or burn themselves out. In response, Beth Buelow carefully unpicks common obstacles such as networking, sales, self-promotion and energy management, and offers practical strategies for dealing with them in a uniquely introvert way. A section on charging for services/products might have been useful, but otherwise this is a highly readable and very welcome book.

Although it focuses specifically on entrepreneurship, there is much in the first half at least that is relevant to achieving success as an introvert more generally. However, if you are an introvert either already running your own business, or thinking of starting one up, this is definitely a must read.

  1. This is great – just what I need to read as I find the idea of promoting myself or selling something frankly terrifying!
